June 2023 Advocacy Update: Creative Circle CDC

Friendships! Socializing is one of the key challenges in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. They can experience difficulty with many social skills, which can often be misinterpreted by people who don't fully understand their condition.

To help them learn basic social skills and interact better with others, you need to explain to the child what needs to happen during interactions and show them how it is done, sometimes through a story or with the help of a picture book so they can better visualize the situation.

Most importantly, give them time to practice in school, at home, and in the community, with full understanding that although it may be easy for us to socialize, it can be very difficult and sometimes frustrating for them. It is also important to reinforce their learning through praise so that they know they are doing it right.

Stan and Lucas have developed a friendship through these steps. They even chose where they wanted this picture to be taken. They are always making creative stuff and helping each other do things. They make each other better!
