Wave 5 Spark and Inspire Workshop on Electronics

April 1, 2023. It was a warm sunny day in Barangay Laiban, Tanay Rizal- a remote off-grid community situated 3 hours away from Metro Manila. The community is home to over 2,300 people, including a small tribe of Dumagat Remontado. We visited the community for our 5th wearkindness Spark and Inspire STEM Workshop aimed at educating Grade 4-6 students on the basic concepts of electricity and electronics.

In the workshop, the students learned how to read and understand a schematic diagram and use a multimeter to better understand AC and DC voltage. They were also taught how to use a breadboard and basic electronic components to make simple electronic prototypes.

The highlight of the workshop was the final project, where the students were tasked to build an automatic flood management system. As a community that is often affected by devastating floods, it was important to show the students how their knowledge of STEM can potentially help their community in the future.

With the help of our volunteers, the students in small groups built a prototype that redirects floodwater from one location to another using basic electronic parts and other items they can find inside the school. We saw how the students applied their learnings from our discussions to their electronics learning kit to an actual breadboard with real-world components.

It was incredible to see how easily the students grasped the subject through hands-on learning given the right resources and support. This workshop is part of a series of projects to immerse marginalized students to the world and the limitless possibilities of STEM.

wearkindness Spark and Inspire STEM Workshop and our other projects to promote quality education for all are made possible by your continued support. On behalf of our host community, the dedicated teachers, and our tireless volunteers, thank you so much, and may kindness follow you in all of your endeavors.
